YPNG Monthly Social - September at Sea Venture

YPNG’s September social was held at the Sea Venture Resort, down in Pismo Beach. A cool reprieve from a hot SLO day, more than 60 YPNGers turned out for great beer and wine deals, and free passed appetizers. The Sea Venture provided an exclusive lounge area with indoor and outdoor access, which gave plenty of room to move around and chat.

This month, Anneka from the Prado Day Center was on site to talk about their organization. People were able to learn about what Prado does within the SLO community, and what we as local citizens can do to help. It is as simple as donating needed items like toothpaste or toilet paper, or even donating your time, money or other resources to help out those in need.

As is becoming the norm within YPNG, more and more new members are attending socials and other events. More than ever, there are greater chances to meet new people with similar professional or personal interests. Go to www.ypng.org to see photos of past events and check out the calendar for future gatherings.

YPNG 3rd Annual Movie Night

On August 26th YPNG held their 3rd annual Movie Night to bring awareness and raise money for The Food Bank of SLO County. Held at the Jack House, there were almost a dozen raffle prizes (ranging from tickets to shows to overnight stays to wine tours and tastings), ample amounts of local wine and beer, and terrific movie-fare food catered by Trumpet Vine. A warm evening by SLO standards lent to a perfect setting for an outdoor movie showing. People camped out on the lawn and enjoyed Ghostbusters on the projection screen. Guests were even lucky enough to see some of the stars of the YPNG spoof movie dressed in their full “Hungerbusters” uniforms. The event successfully raised more than $1600 for The Food Bank, which will greatly help those in need within our own community.

YPNG Summer Softball Wrap-Up

August 24th will signify the end of the summer softball season. YPNG had four teams play in the lower division co-ed American League softball, and had an array of talent and final season scores. Going into the final game of the season, YPNG’s Purple People Eaters are undefeated, 8-0, with Twinkie Surprise following up with 6-2, the Recreational Hazards 2-6 and the Green Machine rounding out the pack with a 0-8 season.

Due to popular demand of YPNGers for softball spots, the teams have expanded from four to six for the fall season. Games will start in late August and go through October. With six teams, YPNG will have their own league on Tuesday nights, which might lead to best season of softball yet! Be sure to come out and support your YPNG teams and friends as they play through the fall season.

Summer Backpacking Trip

August 19-22nd was the YPNG annual backpacking trip. Paul Belmont led 12 YPNGers up into the Sierra Nevadas for an extended weekend of hiking, exploring and outdoorsy fun. The group stayed at Kings Canyon National Park, which is home to the magnificent Sequoia trees, a variety of wildlife and a scenic setting for a camping trip. Beginners and experienced hikers/campers were encouraged to join, and all had a fantastic time. Be sure to check out www.ypng.org for photos of the adventure!

YPNG Monthly Hike - August Johnson Ranch Trail Bike Ride

YPNGers took on the great outdoors this month with a bike ride on the Johnson Ranch trail. Paul Belmont led a group of 10-12 people on their bikes around this extended loop. Beginners and experienced people alike joined and had a great time exploring this new trail. Check out the photos on the YPNG website, www.ypng.org, and be sure to join Paul and the other YPNGer for future hiking and bike riding events.

YPNG Monthly Social - August at Talley Vineyards

In early August YPNG hosted a social out at Talley Vineyards, a winery out in the SLO and Arroyo Grande wine country. The venue was large, green and sunny, and attracted between 70-100 YPNGers. Discounted glasses and bottles were available, along with delicious appetizers. People could meander throughout the winery, exploring the outside courtyard and enjoy the vast scenery.

A new aspect to the social was the presence of Habitat for Humanity, who set up an information area within the winery to generate interest and share knowledge about their organization. YNPGers also entered their business cards to win prizes such as bottles of wine donated by Talley and t-shirts brought by Habitat for Humanity. It was another successful monthly social for YPNG. Stay tuned for next month’s event at Sea Venture!

YPNG Monthly Social - July at The Range

In July YNPG trekked up to Santa Margarita for their monthly social, which was hosted at The Range, a hidden north county gem. People were able to order food and enjoy beer and wine in the shaded outdoor space of the restaurant. It was a great opportunity for our north county members to get to the social, and this event attracted many new members. With a strong turnout of about 60 people, YPNG proved that their presence is felt throughout SLO County, not just in downtown SLO.

In addition to the usual social fare, the Atascadero Land Preservation Society was present to chat with members about their organization and how to protect our open lands for future generations to enjoy. It is just one of many ways to get involved in our community to make a positive difference.

YPNG Monthly Hike - San Luis Reservoir Canyon Trail

Last Wednesday YPNG took it to the great outdoors with their monthly hike. They went on the San Luis Reservoir Canyon Trail, an extensive hike that took YPNGers past beautiful water features, through a canyon shaded with trees, up to where they got a great view of SLO and the East Cuesta Ridge. About fifteen or sixteen hikers were led by Paul, who coordinates all of YPNG’s outdoor activities. Great photos can be seen on the YPNG website of the group who hiked the trail, the sights along the way and the fantastic view up on top. For future hikes and other outdoor events, visit www.ypng.org for updates and information. We look forward to seeing you at our next outdoor adventure!

Cuesta Ridge Bike Ride

On June 9th, Paul Belmont, YPNG’s Outdoors Activities Director, led a group of about 25 YPNGers on an off-road bike ride along the Cuesta Ridge. For those who aren’t familiar with the location, the mouth of the trail begins at the peak of the Grade on Northbound 101. A variety of riders joined the pack, ranging from experienced bikers to those who were out to try something new. The ride was a fun challenge: everyone got in a great workout, enjoyed the terrain along the trail, and were rewarded with incredible views at the top. To check out all the photos along the way and at the top, go to the photo link on our website: http://www.ypng.org/Pages/photos.html.

Paul hosts monthly outdoors adventures and encourages all YPNGers to participate, no matter your skill set. Check out the calendar portion of our website for information on the upcoming event in July http://www.ypng.org/Pages/calendar.html. Hope to see you all there! If you have questions for Paul, email him at: outdoors@ypng.org.

YPNG Finishes Spring 2010 Season in Lower Division Softball

Tuesday, June 8th was the final night of softball for the spring 2010 season. Eight teams participated in the American League Lower Division softball league. Four of those teams were YPNG – Recreational Hazards (Orange), Purple Reign, Green Machine, and the Batternut Squashers (Yellow). Each team had a mixture of rookie and seasoned players, some of whom never had picked up a bat before.

Friendly competition kept the games exciting and the morale fueled. The spring season was peppered by poor weather conditions, where some games were postponed or cancelled all together. At the end of the season, the YPNG teams finished in 2nd (Purple Reign), 3rd (Recreational Hazards) 4th (Green Machine), and 5th place (the Batternut Squashers).

The summer season starts on Tuesday, June 15th with a whole new combination of YPNG teams. If you didn’t sign up, come out to enjoy the mild summer nights and some lighthearted softball fun, show-casing all of your YPNG All-Stars. Sign-ups for the fall season will open late in the summer, so keep your eyes open for the email announcement, so you don’t miss another opportunity to play!

YPNG Monte Carlo Night

The YPNG Monte Carlo was a huge success thanks to all who attended and our generous sponsors/donors. Thanks to you, we raised $1,200 dollars for the San Luis Obispo Children's Museum which means that 10 school classrooms can use the funds to visit the museum as a field day.

There were approximately 150 guests dressed in their glam attire, dancing, gaming, enjoying local wines and beers, and eating delicious fare all for a worthy cause. After the raffle baskets were awarded and the dancing wound down at the Children’s Museum, all the guests were invited to Native Lounge for a second wind of celebration.

The night's event featured gaming tables from All In Fun, Live DJ from Kramer Entertainment, Photo Booth from Snap Cubby, Appetizers and Dinner from Catering Unlimited and dancing under the spectacular lights from Stollmeyer Lighting. Our thanks goes out to those who donated their time, staff, and services especially the Children's Museum. Special thanks to local businesses for their donations:

April Professional Development Event - Healthy Lunch Hour!

In late April YPNG member Marina Waddell, of Om Massage Therapy & Wellness Consulting, hosted a professional development event on maximizing your lunch hour by making smart choices for your body and mind. There were speakers, including Marina herself, on how to utilize your lunch hour for an effective workout, how to select healthy lunch options in a hurried break, as well as keeping your mind sharp. The professional development event was hosted at Sustenance Cooking Studio, an eatery that features organic and healthy lunch options. Sustenance, which is off Santa Barbara Street, has an industrial-style, open kitchen, with the casual creature comforts of a cozy dining room, with kitchenettes, well-loved tables and bright artwork. Part of the donations of the event went to benefit the Youth Fitness and Health Education Program.

YPNG Winter Backpacking Trip

I spoke with Joni who was 1 of 15 that went on the YPNG Winter Backpacking trip to Dewey Point in Yosemite back in March. It was her first time backpacking but she said it was "appropriate for beginners with an active lifestyle."

BB: Joni, tell me about the trip.

JK: First of all, the trip was amazing; very relaxing and sooo much fun!!! We left SLO around 5:30 Friday night and arrived at Wawona Campgrounds about 11pm; once there we setup tents and then busted out drinks and smores!

Luckily, Anhtuan and Holly met us up there (they left the day before) and already had campsites and a fire going.

The following morning we woke up, had breakfast, prepared and sorted food and packed up everything to start the real adventure.

The hike started at Badger Pass where we put on our packs and snowshoes and hiked for about 4 miles, I think it only took us around 2 hours to reach our destination…Beautiful Dewey Point! Wow…words and pictures cannot explain the beauty and the feeling once there! I think I was speechless for an hour or so.

BB: Did you know everyone on the trip?

JK: I knew a little over half the people and got to know the other half…a great group of friends!

BB: Would you do it again?

JK: Once the weekend was over, I was ready to plan for the following weekend, so I would definitely do it again…can’t wait for the summer backpacking trip!

BB: Any regrets?

JK: We didn’t get to dig a snow cave or have snowball fights! But we did get to hang out and have fun with Anhtuan’s camera!

YPNG April Social

On April 7th YPNG hosted their monthly social at Edna Valley Winery. YPNGers enjoyed tasting the variety of wines offered, such as the winery's signature Chardonnay, or the equally delicious Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. The weather was perfect that evening, as most attendees congregated out back to enjoy the warm sunset and beautiful scenery. It was an event that reminded all YPNGers how amazing the "SLO Life" really is.

The hot topics at the social were the upcoming Monte Carlo night, which is coming up on April 30th. Buy your tickets now so you don't miss out! http://www.ypng.org/montecarlo/. There were also discussions about the YPNG Community Involvement Committee. There are many ways to get inolved with YPNG and with the local community. It not only helps out those around us, but provides a fantastic opportunity to network and socialize with other young professionals in SLO County.

YPNG March Group Climb - SLO-Op Bouldering Gym

On March 10th, YPNG opted for a more challenging Wednesday night group climb activity. SLO-Op Bouldering Gym hosted YPNG to an indoor bouldering experience. The staff on hand gave brief lessons on how to maneuver up the rocky walls, shared climb techniques and showed how the different colored grips represented different skill levels. The bouldering walls at SLO-Op Bouldering Gym offer a variety of options, depending on the climber’s skill level. Some walls are structured for novices; other walls are concave, which provides a challenge for more experienced climbers. The majority of YPNGers were new to climbing and bouldering, but with the assistance of other YPNG members and the assurance of foam pads below, they managed to catch on quickly and climb to the top!

YPNG 4th Annual Ski Trip

Last month’s YPNG 4th annual Ski Trip was yet another success. Nothing like some games and dancing to break the ice between 60 members.

Some weekend highlights:

Saturday snowboarders and skiers were met with just the right amount of sunshine and snowfall – nothing a little hot tubbin and hot chocolate couldn't heal. For those who didn't make it on to the slopes enjoyed a relaxing afternoon sledding and snowball fighting. A big thank you goes to Tyler Benson and Jamie Magon for planning the trip and to Sasha and Anthony Palazzo for making Saturday's traditional lasagna dinner. All-in-all the weekend was full of good food, great friends and unforgettable memories.

YPNG Social at Embassy Suites

Despite the dreary weather, the March YPNG social had a successful showing. The Embassy Suites kindly hosted the event in their Atrium Room, which provided ample space for the 55 YPNGers in attendance. As always, the socials are prime opportunities to meet new or old members, to develop networking prospects, and to discover some great friendships. The big buzz of the night was the upcoming Monte Carlo Casino Night (April 30th), which is a benefit event for The San Luis Obispo Children's Museum. Check out the YPNG website to buy your tickets.

YPNG Social at Ciopinot

Great turnout at the February social with a mix of new and long standing members. Thanks to Ciopinot and Leonard for hosting us in the back patio and accommodating our large group. The wine selection was excellent.

We announced the charity event, Bowling for Kids Sake, benefitting Big Brothers and Big Sisters coming up on March 7th. We are looking for YPNG members to fill out some teams and have a fun day bowling for charity and we are always looking for volunteers to get involved in many of the YPNG programs.

Keep your eyes on the calendar for upcoming events!
